Indonesian Community for European Studies (ICES) or Komunitas Indonesia untuk Kajian Eropa (KIKE) were having the fourth meeting as the continuity of their attempt on nurturing an association of European Studies scholars in Indonesia. This time, ICES Workshop on European Studies was initiated and hosted by Universitas Budi Luhur (UBL), Jakarta. The workshop took place from 5-6 November 2015 at International Relations Laboratory of UBL.
Workshop on European Studies at UBL succeeded in inviting more than 20 lecturers from 30 higher education institutions. The participants consisted of the lecturers of International Relations who are currently teaching European courses and also they who have a huge interest in developing European subject at their home university or institute.
The theme of this two-day workshop is ‘curriculum development’, as the follow-up of previous ICES workshop at Universitas Hasanuddin Makassar on last August. This theme, as Muhadi Sugiono stated, did not aim to make a set of to-do-list for European studies lecturers in delivering the subjects to their students. This meeting was intended to enlighten the lecturers about the European courses that taught outside their own universities, so that there would be sharing and learning among them. The workshop was also aimed to enlist what competences would be preferable in every learning aspect for undergraduate students in studying European courses. However, this was not supposed to be a mandatory directive nor meant as a making of uniform syllabus, since a syllabus was considered as a ‘private area’ of each department in each institutions. Hence, the product that was planned to be the result of this curriculum development was a module or a ‘resource pack’ of European courses teaching, which would consist of point of competence, discussion theme, teaching substance and material reference. This module will be composed by the collaboration of ICES member. Hopefully, the module will become a reference for the lecturers who want to have some modification on their European courses syllabus or as a hint for them who want to develop European subjects.
The next ICES meeting was planned to take place on a special panel at AIHII (Indonesian International Relations Association) Convention on 24-28 November 2015.
